Comparison table
| Solution | Difficulty | Programming knowledge | Use case | Extensibility | Performance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skript | Low | None to start | Commands, events, light game rules | Addons, functions | Good for event-driven work | Fast customisation by owners |
| Java plugin (Paper API) | High | Java, Gradle or Maven | Any server feature | Unlimited | Best | Large or performance-critical systems |
| Kotlin plugin | High | Kotlin, build tools | Any server feature | Unlimited | Comparable to Java | Developers who prefer Kotlin |
| Denizen | Medium | Scripting concepts | NPCs, quests, scripted scenes | Its own script ecosystem | Good for its use cases | Story-driven and NPC-heavy servers |
| Vanilla datapacks | Medium | mcfunction commands | Rules, recipes, advancements | Limited to vanilla features | Good, runs in vanilla | Plugin-free and Realms-style setups |
These are qualitative descriptions to help you choose, not benchmark scores.
When each option makes sense
Skript
Best when the person running the server wants to build features themselves and change them often. It covers most commands, rewards, messages and game rules with very little code.
Java plugins
Best for anything that runs constantly, manages large amounts of data, or will be maintained by a development team. You get full API access, compile-time checks and the best performance, at the cost of setup and build time.
Kotlin plugins
The same platform as Java with a more concise language. A good choice for developers already comfortable with Kotlin; it adds the Kotlin runtime to your plugin.
Denizen
A scripting plugin with a strong focus on NPCs and scripted interactions, often paired with Citizens. Its syntax differs from Skript, so moving between them means relearning.
Vanilla datapacks
Work without any plugins and survive in environments where plugins are not allowed. They are limited to what vanilla commands can do.
Can you combine them?
Yes. Many servers use Skript for quick customisation and Java plugins for heavy systems. Read Skript vs Java plugins for a detailed comparison and a hybrid approach.
