Skript plugin FAQ

Clear answers to the questions people ask most about downloading, installing, securing and developing with Skript.

Getting started

What is the Skript plugin?

Skript is a free plugin for Paper Minecraft servers that lets you add features with a readable scripting language instead of Java. You write .sk files describing what should happen on events such as a player joining, a command or a timer, and Skript runs that code on your server. It is maintained by the SkriptLang team and released under the GPL-3.0 licence.

Do I need programming experience to use Skript?

No. Skript was designed for server owners who do not know Java. Lines read close to English, and errors point to the exact line that needs fixing. Some logical thinking helps, especially with conditions and loops, but most people learn by copying a small working example, changing it, and reloading to see the result straight away.

Is Skript free to use?

Yes. Skript is open source and every release is free on the official GitHub page. You can use it on personal and commercial servers within the terms of its GPL-3.0 licence. Some third-party addons or script packs may be sold separately, but the core plugin itself never requires payment, surveys or unlock codes.

Download & installation

Where should I download Skript?

Download Skript from the official SkriptLang releases page on GitHub, or from its Hangar page, which points to the same releases. Avoid re-upload sites, because they can serve outdated or modified jars. SkriptPlugin.com does not host the file; our download page links straight to the official source and explains how to check you have the genuine release.

How do I install Skript?

Stop your Paper server, place the Skript jar in the plugins folder, and start the server again. Skript creates a plugins/Skript folder with a scripts directory. Run /sk info to confirm it loaded, then create a .sk file in the scripts folder and load it with /sk reload. Our installation guide covers each step, including hosting panels.

Where do I put Skript scripts?

Save scripts as files ending in .sk inside plugins/Skript/scripts/. You can organise them into subfolders. Any file whose name starts with a hyphen is ignored, which is a convenient way to disable a script without deleting it. After adding or editing a file, run /sk reload followed by the script name to apply your changes.

Compatibility

Which Minecraft versions does Skript support?

Skript supports roughly the last 18 months of Minecraft releases. Version 2.16.2, released on 1 September 2026, supports Paper 1.21.4 to 26.2. Older servers need an older Skript release whose notes list their version, although those builds no longer receive fixes. Always read the "Supports" line on the release page before downloading a new version.

Does Skript work on Spigot?

Current Skript releases require Paper and do not support Spigot or CraftBukkit. Paper is a performance-focused fork that runs most Spigot plugins unchanged, so switching is usually straightforward. Back up your server, replace the Spigot jar with the matching Paper build, start it, and check the console for any plugin warnings before players join.

Which Java version does Skript need?

Skript needs the same Java version as the Paper build it runs on. Paper 1.21.x requires Java 21, and Paper 26.x requires Java 25. If your server crashes on start or Skript refuses to enable after an update, check the Java version first, especially on shared hosts where the default Java image can lag behind.

Security

Is Skript safe to install?

Skript from the official SkriptLang releases is widely used and its source code is public. Like any plugin, it runs with full server access, so safety depends on where you download it and which scripts you install. Use the official source, read scripts before installing them, and test changes on a staging server first.

Can a Skript script harm my server?

Yes, a malicious or careless script can. Scripts can run console commands, give items, change permissions or delete data. Before installing a script from a forum or Discord, read it fully and look for console commands, op changes and unexplained web requests. Give every command a permission and keep regular backups of plugins/Skript.

Should I back up before updating Skript?

Yes. Copy the whole plugins/Skript folder, including config.sk, your scripts and variables.csv, before replacing the jar. Feature releases can change syntax, and a backup lets you roll back quickly if a script stops parsing. Update addons at the same time only after confirming they support the new Skript version.

Troubleshooting

Why is Skript not loading on my server?

The most common reasons are running Spigot instead of Paper, starting the server with an older Java version, using a Minecraft version the Skript release does not support, or having two Skript jars in the plugins folder. Read the startup log from the top; the first error usually names the cause directly.

What does "Can't understand this condition/effect" mean?

Skript could not match that line to any syntax it knows. It is usually a typo, syntax from a different Skript version, or a line that needs an addon you have not installed. Compare the line with the official documentation for your version, fix it, and run /sk reload on that script to confirm.

How do I reload scripts without restarting?

Use /sk reload followed by the script name, such as /sk reload shop, or /sk reload scripts to reload every script. These commands reparse your files and report any errors immediately. Avoid the server-wide /reload command, which Paper warns can break plugins. New plugin or addon jars still need a full restart.

Development

Can Skript replace Java plugins?

For many server features, yes: commands, messages, kits, rewards, simple economies and game rules. For large systems, heavy per-tick logic or code that needs automated tests, Java plugins remain the better tool. Many servers use both, with Skript for quick customisation and Java for performance-critical parts identified through profiling.

What are Skript addons?

Addons are separate plugins that add new syntax to Skript, such as NBT data, scoreboards, inventory menus, YAML files or SQL databases. Popular examples include SkBee, skript-gui and skript-reflect. Install them in the plugins folder beside Skript, and always check that each addon supports your current Skript version before updating either one.

How do I make Skript scripts run faster?

Measure first with a profiler such as spark. Then replace every-tick loops with specific events, keep busy events like player move small, check cheap conditions first, use local variables, and stop lists from growing forever. If one trigger still dominates the profile after optimising, consider moving that piece to a small Java plugin.
